The county was formed in 1837 and named after Edward Livingston, a prominent American jurist and statesman, influential in the drafting of the Louisiana Civil Code of 1825, a civil code based largely on the Napoleonic Code. The county seat is Chillicothe. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 14,871 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 539 square miles of which 532 square miles is land and 6.2 square miles is water.
