Wilkinson County Overview

Wilkinson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi, established in 1802. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,878. Its county seat is Woodville; however, Centreville is the largest community. The county is named for a Revolutionary War military leader and first governor of the Louisiana Territory after its acquisition by the United States in 1803, James Wilkinson. In the early 20th century the boll weevil infestation destroyed much of the cotton crops, and mechanization caused a further loss of agricultural jobs. Timber has been harvested and processed as a new commodity crop. Because the population of the rural county has continued to decline, towns have started to develop heritage tourism to attract more visitors. The county has a total area of 678 square miles of land, plus ten square miles of water, and is home to a portion of the nationally protected Homochitto National Forest. Neighboring counties include three in Louisiana: East Feliciana Parish too the southeast, West Feliciana Parish to the south, and Concordia Parish to the west. Three Mississippi counties border to the north, northeast, and east: Adams, Franklin, and Amite respectively. Four zip codes have been deployed for use in the county, the largest of which is 39669.
