Wayne County Overview

Established in 1809, Wayne County, Mississippi was named for General Anthony Wayne. The population, as of the 2010 census was 20,747. Waynesboro is both the county seat and the largest community. The fifth largest county in the state by land area, the county has a total area of 814 square miles, of which 811 is land, and the remaining three-square miles is water. Adjacent counties include Clarke to the north, Greene to the south, Perry to the southwest, Jones to the west, and Jasper to the northwest. In addition, two Alabama counties border to the northeast (Choctaw) and southeast (Washington). The county is also home to a portion of the nationally protected De Soto National Forest. Of the seven zip codes assigned to the county, the largest is 39367.
