Washington County Overview

Established in 1827, Washington County is in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 51,137. Its county seat is Greenville, which is also the largest community. The county is named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The county has a total area of 761 square miles, 725 of which is land, and the remaining 36 square miles is water. Bordering counties include two in Arkansas, Chicot to the west, and Desha to the northwest. Remaining neighbors are all in Mississippi: Bolivar to the north, Sunflower to the northeast, Humphreys to the east, Sharkey to the southeast, and Issaquena to the south. The county is also home, or partially home, to three nationally protected areas: Holt Collier National Wildlife Refuge, Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge, and Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge. With a total of nine zip codes in use by the county, the largest is 38701.
