Tishomingo County Overview

Tishomingo County, Mississippi was created in 1836 and named for Chickasaw Chief Tishomingo. The largest community and county seat is Iuka, and as of the 2010 census, the population was 19,593. Tishomingo was referred to in the Coen brothers’ film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? The county, which as a total area of 424 square miles of land, plus 20 square miles of water and is home to the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway. The highest natural point in the state, is Woodall Mountain in the county, which stands at 806 feet. Adjacent counties are: Hardin county, Tennessee to the north and three Alabama counties to the northeast, east, and southeast. They are Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin respectively. Three additional counties in Mississippi are neighbors: Itawamba to the south, Prentiss to the southwest, and Alcorn to the northwest.
