Tippah County Overview

Tippah County is a county located on the northern border of the U.S. state of Mississippi that was established in 1836. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,232. Its county seat, Ripley is also its largest community. The name is a Chickasaw word, which means “cut off,” likely came about because Tippah Creek cuts off the western part of the county from the eastern part before it empties into the Tallahatchie River. One of former President Bill Clinton’s great-grandfathers is buried in Tippah. The county has a total area of 460 square miles, most of which is land. Neighboring counties include one in Tennessee, Hardeman to the north. Other adjacent counties are: Alcorn to the northeast Prentiss to the southeast, Union to the south, and Benton to the west. The county is home to a portion of nationally protected Holly Springs National Forest. Of the nine zip codes assigned to the county, 38663 is the largest.
