Tallahatchie County Overview

Established in 1833, and located in the Mississippi Delta region, Tallahatchie County had a population of 15,378 as of the 2010 census. The Tallahatchie River runs north to south through the county and eventually intersects with the Yazoo River in LeFlore County. The largest community is Charleston, which is also one of two county seats. The second county seat is Sumner. The county has a total area of 645 square miles of land, plus seven square miles of water. Surrounding counties are: Quitman to the north, Panola to the northeast, Yalobusha to the east, Grenada to the southeast, Leflore to the south, Sunflower to the southwest, and Coahoma to the northwest. The county is home to portions of two nationally protected areas: The Coldwater River National Wildlife Refuge and the Tallahatchie National Wildlife Refuge. Of the 17 zip codes assigned to the county, 38921 is the most populous.
