A Mississippi county, Stone was established in 1916, was named for a former state governor, John M. Stone. The population, as of the 2010 census was 17,786 and the total area of the county is 445 square miles of land, plus three-square miles of water. The county is home to the Sweetbay Bogs Preserve, which is a nationally protected area. It is also home to a portion of another protected area, the De Soto National Forest. Neighboring counties are: Perry to the northeast, George to the east, Jackson to the southeast, Harrison to the south, Pearl River to the west, and Forrest to the northwest.
