Smith County, Mississippi was established in 1833, and named for Major David Smith. Perhaps best known for its watermelons, Smith had a population of 16,491 as of the 2010 census. A dry county, the county seat and largest community is Raleigh. The county has a total area of 637 square miles, which is almost all land. Adjacent counties are: Scott to the north, Jasper to the east, Jones to the southeast, Covington to the south, Simpson to the west, and Rankin to the northwest.
