Scott County Overview

Established in 1833, Scott County, a short 45-minute drive from Jackson, was named for a former state governor Abram M. Scott. The county, located in Mississippi had a population of 28,264 as of the 2010 census. Forest is both the county seat and the largest community. In September 2014 the ACLU and the MacArthur Justice Center filed a class-action suit against the Scott County court and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for violations of the Sixth and Fifteenth amendments to the US constitution. The reason was because of their lengthy detention of suspects and failure to provide them with counsel soon after arrest, setting unfair bail, taking too long to reach indictments, and failing to provide speedy trials. The US District Court did not certify the three classes; however, did retain the claims for damages by the two named plaintiffs. The county has a total area of 610 square miles, almost all of which is land. Neighboring counties are: Leake to the north, Newton to the east, Smith to the south, Rankin to the west, and Madison to the northwest. A portion of the nationally protected Bienville National Forest lies within the county lines. Nine zip codes have been assigned to the county, 39074 is the most populous.
