Prentiss County Overview
Established in 1870 and named for Seargent Smith Prentiss, a Natchez debater and speaker, Prentiss county had a population of 25,275 as of the 2010 census. Note that Mr. Prentiss was not related to the military, his first name was Seargent. The county seat, and largest community is Booneville. A portion of the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway is within county lines. With a total area of 418 square miles, most of which is water, bordering counties are: Alcorn to the north, Tishomingo to the east, Itawamba to the southeast, Union to the west, and Tippah to northwest. The most populous zip code is 38829 and it is one of seven total zip codes in use in Prentiss county.
