Pontotoc County Overview
Pontotoc County, Mississippi was established in 1836. Its name is a Chickasaw word that means, land of hanging grapes. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,957. Its county seat, and largest community is Pontotoc. The original Natchez Trace and the current-day Natchez Trace Parkway both pass through the southeast corner of Pontotoc County. The Natchez Trace Parkway is under national protection. The county has a total area of 501 square miles, three square miles is water and the remaining 498 square miles is land. Bordering counties are: Union to the north, Lee to the east, Chickasaw to the south, Calhoun to the southwest, and Lafayette to the west. The largest zip code in the county is 38863, and it is one of ten utilized by the county.

The Circuit Clerk:
- Keeps a general court docket in which all names and parties in each case, plea, indictment, records from inferior courts on appeal, and other papers are entered
- Keeps orders of the court which are referenced in the minute book
- Keeps the execution docket
- Enters a full and complete record of the proceedings of the suit
- Serves as a registrar for voters in the county
- Collects a filing fee from candidates pursuing a county office or legislative seat within the county
- Works with the election commission to provide election information (results, candidates, etc.)
- Notifies citizens who have been selected to serve on jury duty
- Prepares a jury list for the attorneys
- Familiarizes jurors with the courthouse
- Receives and files all documents during trials
- Issues subpoenas
- Conveys jury instructions given by the judge
- Receives verdicts of jurors and reads them in open court
