Perry County Overview

Perry county, Mississippi was created in 1820 and named for Oliver Hazard Perry, who was a naval hero in the War of 1812. The county had a population of 12,250 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is New Augusta; however, Richton is the largest community. The county has a total area of 647 square miles of land, plus three-square miles of water. Adjacent counties are all in Mississippi and are: Wayne to the northeast, Greene to the east, George to the southeast, Stone to the south, Forrest to the west, and Jones to the northwest. The county is also home to a portion of the nationally protected De Soto National Forest. The Black Creek Wilderness and the Leaf River Wildlife Management Area are both nationally protected and are also in Perry County. Of the eight zip codes deployed in the county, the largest is 39476.
