Marion County Overview

Established in 1811, Marion County, Mississippi was named for Francis Marion, an American Revolutionary War guerilla leader. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,088. Its county seat is Columbia, and it is also the largest community. The county has a total area of 549 square miles, of which 542 square miles is land and 6.2 square miles is water. Neighboring counties include one in Washington Parish, Louisiana to the south. The remaining border counties are all in Mississippi and are: Jefferson Davis to the north, Lamar to the east, Pearl River to the southeast, Walthall to the west and Lawrence to the northwest.
