Madison County Overview

Established in 1828, Madison County, Mississippi was named for US President James Madison. As of the 2010 census, the population was 95,203. The county seat is Canton; however, Ridgeland is the largest community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 742 square miles, of which 715 square miles is land and 27 square miles is water. The southeastern border of the county is defined by the old course of the Pearl River before it was dammed to create the 33,000 acres Ross Barnett Reservoir. The county has several neighboring Mississippi counties: Attala to the north, Leake to the east, Scott to the southeast, Rankin to the south, Hinds to the southwest, and Yazoo to the west. The county is also partially home to the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway. The largest zip code in the county is 39110, and it is one of 11 total zips.

The Circuit Clerk serves as the voter registrar and assists with elections. The Clerk’s office keeps marriage licenses, jury lists, civil and criminal trial dockets, and licenses for doctors and certain other professionals. The Clerk summons the various juries. He or she also receives the appropriate papers when candidates qualify to run for public office. Absentee ballots are available at the Circuit Clerk’s office. We also maintain Judgment Rolls. The Circuit Clerk maintains all court records, filings, paper and accounts for all court costs, fees, fines, and assessments for Circuit Court, County Court and Youth Court.
