Lowndes County Overview

Created in 1830, Lowndes County, Mississippi was named for William Jones Lowndes, a US Congressman. As of the 2010 census, the population was 59,779. Its county seat, and largest community is Columbus. Lowndes County comprises the Columbus, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. Since the late 20th century, it has been designated as one of three counties in the Golden Triangle region of the state. With 506 square miles of land, and 11 square miles of water, the total area is 516 square miles. Two Alabama counties are neighbors, Lamar to the northeast, and Pickens to the southeast. Border counties in Mississippi are: Noxubee to the south, Oktibbeha to the west, Clay to the northwest, and Monroe to the north. The Circuit Clerk is elected at large for a four-year term. The Circuit Clerk provides a variety of services by serving as clerk of the court for Circuit, County and Youth courts. The Circuit Clerk is also the registrar of voters, assists in conduct of all county, state and national elections and issues all absentee ballots. The Circuit Clerk issues marriage licenses and maintains many other records such as the judgment roll.
