Lawrence County Overview
Established in 1814, Lawrence County, Mississippi was named for James Lawrence, who was a naval hero. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,929. Its county seat is Monticello, and it is also the largest community. The total area of the county is 431 square miles of land, plus five square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Simpson to the northeast, Jefferson Davis to the east, Marion to the southeast, Walthall to the south, Lincoln to the west, and Copiah to the northwest.
