Jasper County Overview
Jasper County, Mississippi was established in 1833 and named for Sgt. William Jasper, who distinguished himself in the defense of Fort Moultrie in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. As of the 2010 census, the county had a population of 17,062. There are dual county seats in Bay Springs and Paulding. Bay Springs is the largest community. Bay Springs growth passed that of Paulding. No roadway connected the two parts of the county until one was built in 1935-1936. The still largely rural county is the major producer in the state of gas and oil, located in the southeast, and of timber, cattle, and poultry. The county’s total area is 677 square miles, almost all of which is land. Neighboring counties are all in Mississippi: Newton to the north, Clarke to the east, Wayne to the southeast, Jones to the south, and Smith to the west. A portion of the nationally protected Bienville National Forest lies within the county lines. Of the 14 zip codes assigned to the county, the most populous it 39422.
