Hinds County Overview

Established in 1821 Hinds County, Mississippi, named for a Battle of New Orleans general during the War of 1812, General Thomas Hinds. As of the 2010 census, the population was 245,285, making it the most populous county in Mississippi. Its dual county seats are Raymond and Jackson, the state capital as well as the largest community in the county. It is bordered on the northwest by the Big Black River and on the east by the Pearl River. It is one county width away from the Yazoo River and the southern border of the Mississippi Delta. The county has a total area of 877 square miles and it is the third largest county by land area and fifth largest by total area in the state. Land takes up 870 square miles and the remaining seven is water. Neighboring counties include: Madison to the northeast, Rankin to the east, Copiah to the south, Claiborne to the southwest, Warren to the west, and Yazoo to the northwest. Hinds County is also partially home to the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway. A total of 22 zip codes have been assigned to the county, the largest of which is 39212.

Responsibilities of the Circuit Clerk

  • Serves as Clerk of the County and Circuit Courts (7 Judges).
