Hancock County Overview

Established in 1812, Hancock County, Mississippi is the southernmost county in the state, and sits along the Gulf of Mexico and the Louisiana state line. Specifically, St. Bernard Parish, LA to the south and St. Tammany Parish. LA to the west. As of the 2010 census, the population was 43,929, and its county seat, and largest community is Bay St. Louis. The county is named for Founding Father John Hancock. The area is home to the John C. Stennis Space Center, NASA’s largest rocket engine test facility. The county was severely damaged from Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, causing catastrophic impacts, as much as ten miles inland. The total area of the county is 474 square miles of land, plus 79 square miles of water. Two additional MS counties are neighbors to the north (Pearl River county), and to the east (Harrison County).
