DeSoto County Overview

Established in 1836, DeSoto County, in Mississippi had a population of 161,252 as of the 2010 census. It is the third most populous county in the state. Its county seat is Hernando; however, the largest community is Southaven. The county has lowland areas that were developed in the 19th century for cotton plantations, and hill country in the eastern part of the county. The county is named for Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto, the first European explorer to reach the Mississippi River, the county seat was also named for the same man. The county has a total area of 476 square miles of land, plus 21 square miles of water and is adjacent to three other Mississippi counties: Marshall to the east, Tate and Tunica to the south. Shelby County, TN borders to the north and Crittenden County, AR to the west. The largest of ten zip codes assigned to the county is 38654.
