Clay County Overview

Clay County in Mississippi, was established in 1871 and named for Henry Clay, an American stateman and former US Secretary of State. The largest community and the county seat is West Point. The federal government formerly designated Clay County as the West Point Micropolitan Statistical Area, but the county lost that status in 2013. It is part of the Golden Triangle region of the state. The county’s total area is 410 square miles of land, plus six square miles of water. Clay county is partially home to the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway and neighboring counties are: Chickasaw to the north, Monroe to the northeast, Lowndes to the southeast, Oktibbeha to the south, and Webster to the west.
