Choctaw County Overview

Established in 1833, Choctaw County is in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,547. Its northern border is the Big Black River, which flows southwest into the Mississippi south of Vicksburg. The county seat, and largest community is Ackerman. The county is named after the Choctaw tribe of Native Americans, who long occupied this territory as their homeland before being forced to move west of the Mississippi River by federal troops under the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The county’s total area is 420 square miles, 418 is land and the remaining two square miles is water. Neighboring counties are all in Mississippi and are: Webster to the north, Oktibbeha to the east, Winston to the southeast, Attala to the southwest, and Montgomery to the west. The county is also partially home to two nationally protected areas, the Natchez Trace Parkway and the Tombigbee National Forest.
