Chickasaw County Overview

Established in 1836 and named for the early residents, Chickasaw Native Americans, Chickasaw County had a population of 17,392 as of the 2010 census. Although Houston is the largest community, it is one of two county seats along with Okolona. Home to the first agricultural high school in the state, Cully Cobb, an agricultural pioneer was the initial superintendent. The total area of the county is 502 square miles of land, plus two square miles of water. The county is bordered by six other Mississippi counties: Pontotoc to the north, Lee to the northeast, Monroe to the east, Clay to the southeast, Webster to the southwest and Calhoun to the west. The county is also partially home to two nationally protected areas, The Natchez Trace Parkway and the Tombigbee National Forest. The largest population resides in zip code 38851 and it is one of eight total zip codes assigned to the county.
