Carroll County Overview
Carroll County, Mississippi was established in 1833 and named for the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll of Carrollton. As of the 2010 census, a population of 10,597 resided in the county, which has two seats, in Carrollton and Vaiden. Vaiden is the largest community in the county, which is bordered by the Yazoo River on the west and the Big Black River to the east, it is considered within the Mississippi Delta region. Most of its land is in the hill country, and the total area of the county is 628 square miles plus six square miles of water. The Porter Wagoner song The Carroll County Accident was set here. The county is referred to in the third verse of Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 hit song, Ode to Billie Joe. Adjacent counties are all in Mississippi, to the north, Grenada, Montgomery to the east, Attala to the southeast, Holmes to the south, and Leflore to the west.
