Calhoun County Overview

Calhoun County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,962. Its county seat is Pittsboro; however, the largest community is Bruce. The county is named after John C. Calhoun, the U.S. Vice President and U.S. Senator from South Carolina. Established in 1852, the county has a total area of 588 square miles, almost all of which is water. Neighboring counties are all in Mississippi and they are: Lafayette to the north, Pontotoc to the northeast, Chickasaw to the east, Webster to the south, Grenada, to the southwest, and Yalobusha to the west. The largest zip code in the county is 38916, and it is one of 11 total codes assigned to the county.

Duties include:

  • Keeps a general court docket in which all names and parties in each case, plea, indictment, records from inferior courts on appeal, and other papers are entered
  • Keeps orders of the court which are referenced in the minute book
  • Keeps the execution docket
  • Enters a full and complete record of the proceedings of the suit
  • Serves as a registrar for voters in the county
  • Collects a filing fee from candidates pursuing a county office or legislative seat within the county
  • Works with the election commission to provide election information (results, candidates, etc.)
  • Notifies citizens who have been selected to serve on jury duty
  • Prepares a jury list for the attorneys
  • Familiarizes jurors with the courthouse
  • Receives and files all documents during trials
  • Issues subpoenas
  • Conveys jury instructions given by the judge
  • Receives verdicts of jurors and reads them in open court
  • Issues jurors a county warrant (check) and certificate of service (if needed)
  • Files a Statistical Record of Marriage with the Office of Vital Records with the Mississippi State Department of Health
  • Issues the marriage license
  • Collects a filing fee of $22 per marriage record prepared from the applicant
