Benton County Overview

Benton County, Mississippi was established in 1870 and as of the 2010 census, had a population of 8,729. The county seat is Ashland; however, the largest community is Hickory Flat. According to local legend, residents convinced the post-Civil War Reconstruction government that Benton County was to be named for U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton, but the name honored Confederate Brigadier General Samuel Benton of nearby Holly Springs in Marshall County. By area, it is the fifth smallest county in the state with a total of 409 square miles, all of which is land, except for two square miles of water. The headwaters of the Wolf River meander and braid their way north and west across northern Benton County from Baker’s Pond, the river’s source spring (highest origin of continuous flow) in the nationally protected, Holly Springs National Forest. The county is bordered to the northeast and northwest by two Tennessee counties, Hardeman and Fayette respectively. Eastern neighbors are Tippah County, MS. Union County, MS to the south, and Marshall County, MS to the west. Eleven total zip codes have been assigned to the county and the largest one is 38603.
