Attala County Overview

Attala County Mississippi, established in 1833, is named for Attala, a fictional Native American heroine from an early-19th-century novel of the same name by François-René de Chateaubriand. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,564. Its county seat is Kosciusko, which is also the largest community. The historian of the American Civil War, John D. Winters, was born in Attala County in 1917. Myrtis Methvin, mayor of Castor in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, from 1933 to 1945, and the second woman mayor in Louisiana, was born in Attala County in 1895. The county has a total area of 735 square miles of land, plus two square miles of water. Adjacent counties are all in Mississippi and include: Montgomery to the north, Choctaw to the northeast, Winston to the east, Leake to the south, Madison to the southwest, Holmes to the west and Carroll to the northwest. A portion of the nationally protected Natchez Trace Parkway is also in the county lines. Nine zip codes are in use in the county, the larges one is 39090.

The Circuit Clerk serves as Clerk of the County and Circuit Courts, receives and files all lawsuits, indictments, motions and other related papers in all Civil and Criminal Cases filed in the Circuit or County Courts and issues all process including summons and subpoenas, draws jurors and qualifies juries, keeps a record of all judgments and executions, issues marriage licenses and keeps records of marriages, records medical and other professional licenses, and registers citizens to vote and has other duties in handling elections.

As public recorder, the Clerk handles the recording and storage of several types of documents and maintains various indexes that aid people in researching these records.
