Amite County Overview

The name of Amite County is derived from the French amitié, meaning “friendship.” It is also the name of the river, which runs through the county. It is on the southern border with Louisiana and as of the 2010 census, the population was 13,131. The county seat is Liberty; however, the largest community is Gloster. Noted historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Amite County Courthouse and the Westbrook Cotton Gin, the only one surviving of seven in the county. In addition, 19th-century plantation houses and the Liberty and Bethany Presbyterian churches are included on the Register. The county has a total of 732 square miles, 730 of which is land and the remaining two square miles is water. The county is also partially home to the nationally protected Homochitto National Forest. Adjacent counties are: Franklin, MS to the north, Lincoln, to the northeast, Pike, MS to the east, Tangipahoa Parish, LA to the southeast, St Helena Parish, LA to the south, East Feliciana Parish, LA to the southwest and Wilkinson, MS to the west. The Circuit Clerk serves as Clerk of the County and Circuit Courts, receives and files all lawsuits, indictments, motions and other related papers in all Civil and Criminal Cases filed in the Circuit or County Courts and issues all process including summons and subpoenas, draws jurors and qualifies juries, keeps a record of all judgments and executions, issues marriage licenses and keeps records of marriages, records medical and other professional licenses, and registers citizens to vote and has other duties in handling elections. The clerk also processes Passport Acceptance Agents.
