Steele County is located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The county was formed in 1855 and named after Franklin Steele, an early settler of Minneapolis and developer of Saint Anthony Falls. The county seat is Owatonna. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 36,465 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has an area of 432 square miles of which 430 square miles is land and 2.7 square miles is water. Steele County borders the following counties: Rice County to the north; Dodge County to the east; Mower County to the southeast; Freeborn County to the south and Waseca County to the west. Steele County Recorder’s Office Information

The Recorder’s Office is responsible for the legal records of all real estate in the County. Permanent records of deeds, mortgages and other various real estate documents are recorded and/or filed here. Copies of recorded documents can be obtained for a fee. The Steele County Recorder also acts as Registrar of Titles. The Recorder’s Office generates Certificates of Title conveying land under the Torrens land system. The County Recorder also records military service discharges, and files county officials bonds and oaths of office, official plats of land in the city and rural area and federal and state tax liens. This office assists customers in obtaining legal descriptions for Steele County property and determining ownership of parcels of land.
