Mahnomen County is located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The county was formed in 1906 and named after Ojibwa word meaning “wild rice”. The county seat is Mahnomen. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 5,532 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 583 square miles of which 558 square miles is land and 25 square miles is water. Mahnomen County Assessor’s Office Information
The Mahnomen County Assessor supervises the property assessments of all townships and cities within the county. The property assessments are made by State accredited appraisal staff from the county office and by State certified assessors hired by townships and cities. The assessor’s office maintains assessment records on approximately 4,100 taxable properties and approximately 1,360 tax-exempt properties. The assessor’s office provides township and city assessors with value and classification schedules to be used as guidelines. These schedules are developed and maintained through sales ratio studies completed by county office staff. These studies are used by the County Assessor to adjust and equalize all values between individual properties, taxing districts, school districts, and adjacent counties.
The Assessor’s Office is also responsible for determining whether a property is eligible for the homestead classification. The assessor’s office is responsible for processing applications for owner-occupied, relative, special age, and blind and disabled homesteads, disabled veterans exclusion, and other forms. The assessor’s office provides information to property owners, appraisers, real estate personnel, attorneys, banks and the general public.
