Douglas County is located in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The county was formed in 1858 and named after Stephen Arnold Douglas, a former United States Senator from Illinois (1847-1861). The county seat is Alexandria. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2013, the county has a population of approximately 36,545 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 720 square miles of which 637 square miles is land and 83 square miles is water. Douglas County borders the following counties: Otter Tail County to the north; Todd County to the east; Stearns County to the southeast; Pope County to the south; Stevens County to the southwest and Grant County to the west.
