Located at the inside edge of the ‘mitten,’ Tuscola County is in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and has 914 total square miles. There are 111 square miles of water in the area and it is considered part of the ‘thumb.’ Tuscola is bordered by Huron County to the north, Sanilac County to the east, Bay and Saginaw Counties to the west and Lapeer and Genesee Counties to the south. Approximately 54,263 people lived in the county during the 2013 census. The Tuscola County Clerk is responsible for issuing and maintaining records related to concealed pistol licenses, birth records, marriage and death records, assumed names, co-partnerships, veteran’s discharges, notary bonds, filings for the circuit and family court and administering all election functions. They are also responsible for aiding with genealogy searches. Forms for court, search requests, election documents and marriage are available online, as are some of the records for searching. Most requests must be made via in person request however, during normal business hours.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for land records and other documents related to real and personal property. Most information from this office is available online, as the records have all been digitized after 1992. Earlier records are available for request in person, during normal business hours. Forms related to transfer taxes as well as fee schedules are available online as well.

The Tuscola Equalization Office is responsible for keeping accurate and complete data related to the assessment of all property within the county.
