St. Clair County, Michigan Overview

Located on the eastern border of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, St. Clair County is 115 square miles of water, in 837 total square miles. It is bordered to the north by Sanilac County, the west by Lapeer County, the south by Macomb County and the east by Lambton County, Ontario. Approximately 160,469 people lived in the county during the 2013 census. The County Clerk is responsible for all vital records related to persons within the county. This includes marriage licenses, death certificates and birth records. Divorce records, personal protection orders, concealed weapons permits, military discharges and circuit court filings are done at the County Clerk’s office as well. Forms to request these documents are available online, and birth and death certificates can be requested online or via mail as well as all records being available to request in person, during normal business hours.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for all land records within the county, including warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, leases, liens and mortgages. They are also responsible for recording surveys, plats, land contracts and other real estate documents. Records from 1984 until the present are available online for review and purchase, however these documents are also available to request in person as well. These documents are considered public record and are available for general use.

The assessment office is responsible for determining valuations for all property within the county.

Parcel searches can be conducted online with a variety of different pieces of information while other requests for information can be made directly with the assessment office, in person, during normal business hours. Court records can be searched online for a fee and most court records are considered public record once the case has ended and been filed. Requests can also be made in person, which will also require a fee related to the gathering of all information.

In order to obtain a marriage license in St. Clair County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
