Ontonagon County, Michigan Overview

Located at the northern border of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Ontonagon County is 3,741 square miles and the third least populous county of the state. It has over 1,311 square miles of land, but much of it is uninhabited. It is bordered by Lake Superior and also by Houghton Lake to the east, Gogebic County to the south and Ashland County, Wisconsin to the west. Approximately 6,322 people lived in the county during the 2013 census. The Ontonagon County Clerk is responsible for personal protection orders, concealed weapons permits, military discharges, assumed names, vital records and circuit court filings and fees. They are also responsible for notary public documents, election results, voter registration and family court information. These documents are available for request, for a fee, via in person request. They are not available online.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for property related documents including warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, liens, leases and mortgages. These documents are considered public record and are available for purchase directly from the office. These documents are not available online.
