Monroe County, Michigan

Monroe County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was established as the second county (after Wayne County) in the Michigan Territory in 1817. Its county seat and the county were named in honor of then-President James Monroe in anticipation for his upcoming visit to the area. The largest city and county seat is Monroe. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 152,021 people and a total area of 680 square miles, of which 131 square miles is water and 549 square miles is land. Monroe is Michigan’s only county on Lake Erie. Monroe County borders the following counties:  Wayne County to the northeast; Washtenaw County to the northwest; Essex County, Ontario, Canada, to the east; Lenawee County to the west; and Lucas County, Ohio, to the south.

The Monroe County Clerk is the official recorder of various county records, such as vital records (births, deaths and marriages records), business and professional registration, and Circuit Court records. In addition, the County Clerk is clerk to the Circuit Court and secretary to nearly all official County Boards and Commissions. On the other hand, the Register of Deeds office records official documents affecting ownership of land in the county. Some of the records maintained in the office include deeds, plats, mortgages, and land contracts.

The public can access public records through visiting either the Clerk’s office or the Register of Deeds office in person during office hours. You will need a grantor or grantee name and the approximate year it was recorded to search any land record information; neither office can search ownership by address. Digital images are made of all documents recorded, in addition to journal records.  For more information relating to public records in Monroe County, visit the Monroe County Clerk Website.
