The county is bordered by Manistee County to the north, Lake county to the east, Oceana county to the south and Manitowoc County, Wisconsin to the west. The Mason County Clerk is responsible for all records related to marriage, birth, death and divorce as well as genealogy, circuit court filings and fees, elections, assumed names, personal protection orders, military discharges and concealed weapons permits. These documents are available through the office, but must be requested in person as records are not available online. There is information about what is required to request a specific document and the fees for each.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, liens, gas and oil leases and mortgages. These documents are considered public record and are available for purchase directly from the office. Only some of these documents are available online, though some of the forms are available to search in this manner. For short occasion users, there is a pay as you go plan and there is also a subscription based plan for those who need more access.

The equalization department is responsible for property and tax related information for all properties located in the county.

Through the equalization department you can get access to property descriptions and ownership, assessment rolls, addressing, aerial and parcel maps, county-wide property information, real estate transfers and sales, property tax exemptions and abatements and equalization studies. This information is considered public record and much of it is available on the website. Property records can be searched, as well as general land office maps, topographic maps, road indexes and older reports. There are also property tax estimators and forms, consumer price index info and information on plats and parcels. All of this information is also available by in person request.

Mason County does not make court records available online for purchase or viewing. Documents can be requested directly at the courthouse and can be compiled for you for a fee. Most court records are considered public record once the case has been completely filed and recorded.
