Lapeer County, Michigan

Lapeer County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed on September 18, 1822, and was fully organized on February 2, 1835. The name of the county is a corruption of the French “la pierre”, which means “the flint.”  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 88,319 people and a total area of 663 square miles, of which 643 square miles is water and 20 square miles is land.  Lapeer County borders the following counties: Sanilac County to the northeast, Tuscola County to the northwest, St. Clair County to the east, Genesee County to the west, Macomb County to the southeast, and Oakland County to the southwest.

The Lapeer County Clerk is an elected position, serving a four year term. The office of the clerk is charged with the responsibility of  the issuing and filing of marriage licenses, records of assumed names, co-partnerships, births, deaths, concealed weapon permits, veterans’ discharges, notary bonds, and filings for circuit court. In addition, the clerk’s office administers all election functions required by law.
