Keweenaw County, Michigan Overview

The uppermost section of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is Keweenaw County, which consists of 5,966 square miles, with 91% being water. In fact, only 540 square miles of the county are land. It is the largest county by total area and consists of a large portion of Lake Superior as well as a small island off the coast. It is bordered by Alger County to the east, Houghton County to the south and Thunder Bay District of Ontario to the north. Only 2,191 people lived in the county during the 2013 census. The County Clerk for Keweenaw County is responsible for birth, death and marriage certificates, as well as personal protection orders, military discharge papers, concealed weapons permits and notary public documents. They are also responsible for circuit court filings and divorce records. All of these documents are available for request in person, during normal business hours. Forms are available online to request birth, death or marriage certificates, however none of the records are actually available online.
The Register of Deeds is responsible for the maintenance of documents related to property, both personal and real, and is responsible for deeds, mortgages, liens and leases. These documents are not available online, however they are considered public record and are available for viewing and purchase directly from the office.

Keweenaw County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Keweenaw County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
