Isabella County, Michigan

Isabella County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed in 1859 and named after Queen Isabella I of Castile, based on a suggestion by Henry Schoolcraft. Mt. Pleasant is the largest city in the county and also the county seat.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 70,311 and a total area of 578 square miles, of which 5.0 square miles is water and 573 square miles is land. Isabella County borders the following counties: Clare County to the north, Midland County to the east, Gratiot County to the southeast, Montcalm County to the southwest, and Mecosta County to the west.

The Isabella County Register of Deeds is the official recording office for all land records in the county.  The office is a constitutional office established by the Michigan State Legislature, charged with the responsibility of maintaining legal documents pertaining to real property.  The Register of Deeds records over 200 types of documents; these documents include but are not limited to quit claim deeds, land contracts, warranty deeds, mortgages, releases, powers of attorney, and liens.

Records maintained by the Register of Deeds are open to the public and can be accessed by doing a background check online or by visiting the Register of Deeds’ office in person during office hours. In order to obtain a marriage license in Isabella County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
