Iron County, Michigan Overview
Located along the southern border of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Iron County has approximately 1,211 square miles, with only 45 of those being water. This county was taken partially from Marquette and partially from Menominee Counties. It is bordered to the north by Houghton County and Baraga County, the east by Dickinson County, the south by Forest County, Wisconsin and the west by Gogebic County. The duties of the County Clerk are to maintain and record all documents related to births, deaths, marriages and divorces as well as military discharges, personal protection orders, concealed weapons permits, elections, circuit court filings and notary public requirements. These records can be requested in person, during normal business hours, but are not available online. Many of the forms in order to receive these documents are available online however, such as a request for certified copies of a birth or death record.
The Register of Deeds is responsible for all documents related to property within the county. This includes deeds, mortgages, liens and leases related to both real and personal property. These documents and records are generally considered public record and are available for viewing and purchase directly from the office. These documents are not available online though the fee schedule for many of them is available.
The equalization department of Iron County is responsible for maintaining taxable rates related to the property located within the county.

This office maintains assessment tax rolls, updates tax maps, prepares rollbacks, collects and compiles millage information and prints and compiles tax rolls and bills. The assessment or equalization office keeps track of public records and therefore these documents can be requested in person, during normal business hours. These records are not available online, with the exception of the statewide subdivision plat maps and millage rates for each year.
