Ionia County, Michigan

Ionia County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed 1831 and organized in 1837; it is named for Ionia, a Grecian province.  Ionia is the largest city in the county and also the county seat; other cities include Belding and Portland. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 63,905 people and a total area of 580 square miles, of which 8.7 square miles is water and 571 square mile is land. Ionia County borders the following counties: Gratiot County to the northeast, Montcalm County to the north, Clinton County to the east, Kent County to the west, Eaton County to the southeast, and Barry County to the southwest.

The Ionia County Register of Deeds Office is the keeper of all records that relate to the transfer of real estate in the county. The office records, files, maintains, and retrieves all documents. The Register of Deeds is an elected position currently held by Diane Adams, as of 2015.  When documents are received by the Register of Deeds, they are receipted, time stamped, assigned document numbers, and indexed by name and property descriptions.  The records maintained by the Register of Deeds date back to 1833, and they can be retrieved or copied by the public. Some of the records maintained by the County Register of Deeds include but are not limited to mortgages, liens, plats, and military discharges.

In order to obtain a marriage license in Ionia County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
