Houghton County, Michigan Overview

Houghton County is located almost at the northern tip of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It consists of 1,502 square miles, 33% of which (492 square miles) is water. Bordered to the north by Keweenaw County, the east by Baraga County, the south by Iron County and the west by Ontonagon County, it is also partially surrounded on two sides by Lake Superior. There were approximately 36,225 people living in the county during the 2013 census. The County Clerk of Houghton County is responsible for vital records, including birth, death and marriage, notary public information, assumed names, circuit court files, concealed weapons permits and resolutions and contracts. She is also responsible for military discharge filings, genealogy and naturalization as well as personal protection orders. Much of this information is available for viewing and purchase and requests can be made in person, via phone or via email or fax, during normal business hours. This information is not available online however there are several forms available.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for recorded documents that pertain to any kind of property within the county. This includes deeds, mortgages, land corners, plats and surveys. These documents are considered public record and are available for purchase by request and during normal business hours.
