Grand Traverse County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed on April 7, 1851. The name of the county was derived from a French phrase meaning “long crossing”, and the county is so named because it is situated at the Grand Traverse Bay. The Grand Traverse County Clerk is elected for a 4-year term and is responsible for recording and maintaining all public records in the county. Some of the records maintained by the office of the clerk include but are not limited to vital records (birth records, marriage records, and death records), military discharge papers, assumed names, and co-partnerships. The office also is responsible for  issuing and filing marriage licenses. In addition, the office of the clerk processes concealed pistol licenses, notary bonds, and veteran’s peddler permits.

Records maintained by the office of the clerk can be accessed by doing a background check online or by visiting the office of the clerk in person. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Grand Traverse County Clerk Website.  When obtaining records in person, you will be required to present a written request to the clerk’s office.
