Gogebic County, Michigan Overview

Located in the westernmost portion of Michigan, in the Upper Peninsula, Gogebic county consists of 1,476 square miles with approximately 25% of that (374 square miles) comprising of water. The county was splintered off from Ontonagon County in 1887 and also contains Lake Gogebic, the largest lake in the Upper Peninsula. The county is bordered to the east by Iron County and the south by Vilas County, Wisconsin. There were approximately 15,916 people living in Gogebic during the 2013 census. The Gogebic County Clerk is responsible for all documentation related to births, deaths, marriages, passports, military discharges, circuit court and family court filings, collections and circuit court fines, personal protection orders, voter’s registrations, business certificates and notary public documents. Many of these documents are considered public record and are available for viewing and purchase during normal business hours.
