Delta County, Michigan Overview

Delta County is located in the lower section of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is comprised of 1,991 square miles, 820 of which are water. Bordered on the north by Alger County, the east by Schoolcraft County, the west by Menominee County and the south by Door County, Wisconsin, there were approximately 36,905 people in the county during the 2013 census. Consisting, in part, of the Hiawatha National Forest, the county was originally named for the triangular shape of the Greek letter “delta,” which is similar to the original shape of the county. Information available from the County Clerk includes passport information, birth, death and marriage records, assumed names information, notary public information, voter registration and court fees. This information is available for purchase in person at the office, though many of the required forms are available online. Birth certificates and death certificates may be viewed and purchased online. Other documents must be requested during normal business hours.

The Register of Deeds is responsible for recording deeds, mortgages and other property related documents within the county. Many of these documents, including tax certificates and land contracts, are considered public record and are therefore available for purchase. The fee schedules are primarily available online, however documents must be purchased in person from the office during normal business hours.

The equalization department is responsible for current assessed values of all real and personal property within the county.

If you need anything from the equalization office you must visit during normal business hours, with the exception being state tax commission information, general land office plats and state of Michigan plat maps. Other information included on the website are specific fee schedules for different information. Most of the information in this office is considered public record and is available for purchase.

Delta Court Records Information

Court records and information are not available online through Delta County. The only information currently available online is for the Friend of the Court, which provides information on custody, parenting time and child support with some forms available. Other information must be requested in person, though most court records are considered public record and are available for purchase once filed.

Delta County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Delta County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
