Cass County, Michigan

Cass County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed in 1829 and named after Lewis Cass, the Michigan Territorial Governor at the time the county was created. Dowagiac is the largest city in the county, while Cassopolis is the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 52,293 and a total area of 508 square miles, of which 18 square miles is water and 490 square miles is land, making it the smallest county in Michigan by total area. Cass County borders the following counties: Van Buren County to the north; St. Joseph County to the east; Berrien County to the west; Elkhart County, Indiana, to the southeast; and St. Joseph County, Indiana, to the southwest.

The Cass County Clerk Register is an elected official with a four-year term as provided by the Michigan Constitution. The duties of the Clerk Register are varied, but the main duties are Clerk of the Circuit Court and Registrar of vital records in the county. In addition, the County Clerk Register acts as the Chief Election Officer. The County Clerk Register also issues birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, concealed gun permits, veteran discharge records, assumed business names and partnership certificates, notary commissions, genealogy records, and voter registration records.

Certified copies of vital records are available to eligible persons upon request. To obtain a certified copy of a birth record, the applicant must be:

  • The individual who is the subject of the record
  • The parent(s) named on the record
  • Any heir (with certified death certificate)
  • Legal guardian (with certified papers)
  • Any legal representative of an eligible person

In order to obtain a marriage license in Cass County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
