Branch County, Michigan Overview

Named for the U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Andrew Jackson (John Branch), Branch County is one of the southernmost counties of the state of Michigan. Comprised of 520 square miles, a total of 506 of those miles are land, with only a small amount of water in the area. With a population of approximately 43,649 as of the 2013 census, to the north is Calhoun County, to the east Hillsdale County, to the west St. Joseph County and to the south is Steuben County in Indiana. The Branch County Clerk also serves as the Clerk for, Circuit Court, County Board of Canvassers, Jury Board, Gun Board and Board of Commissioners. She is also the keeper of the circuit court seal, the Registrar of Vital Statistics, Chief Election Officer and a member of the County Plat Board.

The County Clerk is responsible for issuing certified copies of all vital records, marriage licenses and concealed weapons permits as well as handling any circuit court filings, notary public applications, PA 116 farmland forms and voter registration information. These records are not available online, though the PA 116 and military discharge forms are available as well as a form for a court record search.

The Register of Deeds for Branch County keeps track of information related to liens, land and property within the county. These records are considered public and therefore are able to be requested and copied by anyone. For those who need one time access to a document there is a pay per search option online or there is a subscription service available to pay by the month. Single searches are $6.95 with $1 additional charged per page printed. Monthly plans range in price from $75 per month to $400 per month depending on the amount of time spent searching in that period (monthly subscription requests must be mailed or applied for in person).

The Branch County Equalization department keeps record of assessment rolls, property tax documents, survey assessments, accurate property descriptions, valuations of properties and uniform standards for property assessment. There are records as well as property tax estimators, parcel data and request forms available online or information may be requested in person at the office.

Branch Court Records Information

Most court records are considered public record once they have been recorded and are therefore available for anyone to request or copy. Cases through Branch County can be requested in person at the courthouse or can be requested by mail. The form to accompany mailed requests is available on the county website and must be mailed to the County Clerk. Cash or money order is the only way to make payment, which is $10 for the search and $1 per page for copies or an additional $10 and $1 per page for certified versions. If the search is for a case further back than 10 years there is another $1 per year added as well.

Branch County Marriage License Office
In order to obtain a marriage license in Branch County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
