Benzie County is located along the west coast of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, on the banks of Lake Michigan. Comprised of only 860 square miles, over 63% of the county is actually water. The smallest county in Michigan according to land area, it has a total of 17,428 people according to the 2013 census. Bordered to the north by Leelanau County, the east by Grand Traverse County and the South by Manistee County, it also includes a portion of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The County Clerk issues marriage licenses, birth certificates, death certificates, concealed pistol permit applications, assumed names certificates, veterans peddler licenses, certified copies of official documents and assumed name dissolution certificates as well as filing military discharge orders and serving as a notary public. She is also able to answer questions and help with genealogy requests but not with any forms or legal advice. There are fee schedules and forms for information available online (such as dissolution of assumed business name, business registration, application for appointments and marriage applications as well as vital records requests) however these are not available online and must be requested in person during normal business hours.
In Benzie County the Register of Deeds records warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, administrator, tax and sheriff’s deeds, mortgages, patents, mineral deeds, oil and gas leases, plats and restrictions, liens, rights of way, circuit court and probate orders, condominium documents, land corner and remonumentation records, surveys and wills concerning real property.
