Barry County, Michigan

Barry County is located in the state of Michigan. The county was formed on April 29, 1829, by an act of the legislature of the Michigan Territory and organized in 1839. Barry County was named after William Taylor Barry, United States Postmaster General under President Andrew Jackson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a population of approximately 59,173 people and a total area of 577 square miles, of which 24 square miles is water and 553 square miles is land. Barry County borders the following counties: Ionia County to the northeast, Eaton County to the east, Calhoun County to the southeast, Kalamazoo County to the southwest, Allegan County to the west, and Kent County to the northwest.

The Barry County Register of Deeds is charged with the following duties and responsibilities: recording, maintenance, and security of all real estate records for Barry County. The Register of Deeds also assists the public with retrieving and obtaining copies of real estate records. Records maintained by the Register of Deeds can be accessed in person by visiting the Register of Deeds’ office during office hours, by doing a background check online, or by email. The Register of Deeds Office does not perform searches requested by phone.

To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Barry County Register of Deeds Website. Documents available online are indices of recorded documents dating back to August of 1986, Liber 435. Alternatively, you can obtain public records by emailing your request to [email protected]. The records you request will be mailed to you once the required fee has been paid. Below is the fee schedule when requesting public records:

  • Real estate records (per name), 50 cents for each year search ($5 minimum fee)
  • State & federal tax liens, $3 per name
  • All other recorded documents, $1 per page examined
  • Documents not yet recorded, $15 for each 15 minutes (or fraction thereof)
